The Shafters are an American family with uncertain origins in 18th century New England. Descended from the orphan James Shafter Sr. (abt. 1730 ~ 1766) of Massachusetts who later moved to New Hampshire and Vermont, many family members achieved political prominence during the long nineteenth century, especially in Vermont, Michigan, Wisconsin, and California.
